Addiction Medicine
Wexford Health has a dedicated Addiction Medicine Department, including a board-certified Addiction Medicine physician and expert in the field. Wexford provides treatment to the incarcerated population suffering from substance use disorders. Wexford also has extensive experience in implementing, expanding, and continuing patients on Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD). According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2024 approximately 48.4 million people aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder in the past year. This rate of drug abuse and dependence is disproportionately reflected in the United States justice involved population, where The National Institute on Drug Abuse suggests that an estimated 65% of the U.S. prison population has an active substance use disorder.

Addiction Medicine Department
Wexford Health’s cutting-edge Addiction Medicine Department equips our clients, correctional officers, and onsite staff everything they need to create a safe and therapeutic recovery community in our facilities. We encourage and engage patients in all stages of their confinement and recovery journey, a first of its kind inside a correctional environment which is the community standard of care. Because of Wexford Health’s multidisciplinary team approach, we are able to provide different levels of addiction recovery intervention to patients at differing levels of recovery and need.
- Multidisciplinary to treat the whole person – less work for individual providers but aimed at treating the root causes of an individual’s SUD so they can break the cycle of addiction.
MAT/MOUD Treatment
Wexford Health is proud to partner with state facilities that have implemented MAT/MOUD programs, and provides MAT at a majority of our serviced jail facilities.
In one statewide correctional system, Wexford Health provides MAT/MOUD treatment to greater than 50% of the entire incarcerated population.
Wexford Health is committed to sharing our expertise in addiction recovery with our partners in facilities nationwide. Call or email us to discuss how Wexford Health can work with you to tackle the difficulties of treating SUDs in corrections.
Wexford Health highly encourages and believes in MAT/MOUD programming and is equipped to support our clients in adopting a program that is right for their facility. Additionally, Wexford Health provides a medically supervised withdrawal program for patients with substance use disorders, intoxicated, or undergoing withdrawal upon entering a facility and decline MAT/MOUD. We also provide comprehensive substance use counseling services, including assessment and referral; individual and group counseling; therapeutic communities; and other treatment interventions.
