At Wexford Health, quality isn't a checkbox — it's a continuous process built into everything we do. At every facility we serve, we maintain a comprehensive Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program designed to monitor, evaluate, and elevate the care our patients receive.
When Collegial Review was introduced at two major contracts, inappropriate referrals decreased by 30% and 25%, respectively. This demonstrates improved referral quality, with fewer inappropriate requests and denials.
The Collegial Review program uses a proactive team approach, enabling physicians to exchange ideas and share knowledge. This supports efficient resource use and cost-effective health care management.
Our quality oversight operates at three levels. At the facility level, a multidisciplinary CQI Committee — including medical, mental health, pharmacy, dental, and nursing representatives — meets regularly to review operations, set performance benchmarks, and take corrective action when needed. For large, multi-facility contracts, we add a contract-wide committee to address system-level quality trends. At the top, our corporate CQI Committee — led by our Director of Quality Management & Performance Improvement — ensures consistent, high-quality care across every contract we hold.
We use a variety of tools to maintain high standards, including procedural audits, clinical outcome studies, patient chart reviews, mock accreditation audits, and regular staff meetings. Our quarterly Quality Scorecard evaluates key performance indicators across major clinical functions, giving leadership a clear picture of where we excel and where we can improve. We evaluate our programs against eight core criteria: accessibility of care, appropriateness of care, continuity of care, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, provider-patient interaction, and safety.
When areas for improvement are identified, our teams develop formal Corrective Action Plans with defined goals, timelines, and responsible parties. We also conduct a rigorous peer-review program, with annual clinical performance evaluations for all providers — physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, dentists, and more — ensuring that every member of our team meets our high standards. The result is a healthcare program that doesn't just respond to problems — it anticipates and prevents them, delivering better outcomes for patients, facilities, and the communities we serve.
