Substance use disorders are among the most pressing clinical challenges in correctional healthcare. In response to these challenging issues, Wexford Health has a dedicated Corporate addiction management team, led by a Board Certified addiction specialist, Dr. Michael Mitcheff, Wexford Health’s Corporate Medical Director for Addiction Medicine & Utilization Management, and a full-time RN who coordinates all Corporate Addiction treatment programs. Every primary care clinician across Wexford Health's contracts completes a formal eight-hour addiction medicine course, supplemented by ongoing, in-depth training which equips clinicians to recognize, evaluate, and manage substance use disorders with clinical rigor and compassion — including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) protocols, withdrawal management, and long-term recovery support — ensuring patients receive evidence-based addiction care as an integrated part of their overall health management, not a separate or secondary service.

Wexford Health's infection control program protects patients and staff through vigilant monitoring of infectious and communicable diseases—including COVID-19, HIV, TB, HCV, HBV, MRSA, and influenza—guided by CDC and OSHA standards. Each facility has a multidisciplinary Infection Control Committee and a dedicated Infection Control Coordinator who oversee disease surveillance, required health department reporting, intake screening, and continuity of care through chronic and communicable disease clinics.

When a communicable disease is diagnosed, our team responds immediately with CDC-consistent isolation protocols and strict precautions for hygiene and handling infectious materials, and we connect patients leaving custody with community providers so care continues uninterrupted. We further safeguard our facilities through monthly environmental inspections and ongoing staff education on standard precautions, the use of personal protective equipment, and the safe handling of biohazardous materials.
