The period right after release from incarceration is one of the highest-risk times for overdose, particularly for individuals who choose not to continue medical treatment for opioid use disorder. Wexford Health takes this risk seriously and works closely with each patient to ensure they understand what can happen if medication-assisted treatment (MAT/MOUD) is refused or abruptly discontinued upon release.
For patients nearing release who are on MAT, we offer options designed to protect their health and reduce the chance of relapse or overdose:
Just as important as the treatment itself is what comes after. Our care teams coordinate with community-based substance use disorder treatment providers in the patient's county and state, helping ensure continuity of care and a stronger support system once they return home.
Our goal is simple: every patient leaves incarceration with a clear understanding of their risks, options, and a plan for continued care — because recovery doesn't end at release.
